Frequently Asked Questions.

What inspired you to start Wheel Life Story?

My inspiration came from learning how to write and thoroughly enjoying it, that’s the boring and simple answer. But, I guess it really comes from scribbling my life stories in my multiple notebooks and realising that they are either disturbing horror stories or epic comedies. These stories could possibly, as writing them has done for me help someone overcome similar situations or just realise that there is someone else out there who’s life is an even bigger shit show than theirs.

How do you balance caring for five children while managing life in a wheelchair?

I manage by asking for help. I couldn’t and wouldn’t be a functioning human today without my team. Gav, Mam and Dad truly are the reason that I function at all.

What advice do you have for others adjusting to wheelchair life?

Take it one wheel at a time. Build a team, I am lucky to have a great family and friends around me but there have also been excellent physio’s, OT’s, support groups and even social workers that have been hugely supportive. Celebrate the little wins! And develop a great sense of humor.

How do you stay motivated through tough times?

My motivation comes firstly from looking at my kids. They are a constant reminder that I have to keep going. Secondly I have an intense fear of returning to the woman I was six or seven years ago. Broken, suicidal, and an all round mess. Looking at how far I have come, the desire never to go back gives me a super human strength to plough forwards!

What topics do you cover on your blog?

Anything that my bonkers brain comes up with at the time. But as my stories are real they will always be about family life, wheelie life, (mature) student life and general 40+ woman stuff!
